Bowling-Division Champs
This year has been very successful for the Varsity Girls' Bowling team. Not only did they manage to place at a majority of their tournaments, but they also were able to snatch the title of Division champions on Thursday, January 19th.
Although the girls have had an outstanding season, not far behind in the fight for the title were the Grant Bulldogs. Only beating them by a mere point, it came down to the game against Round Lake. At their home lanes in Island Lake, the girls believed they had an advantage and they were right. In order to succeed in becoming the champions, for the first time in the five years the program has existed, the girls needed to sweep the Round Lake Panthers in all three games.
Coming out strong for the first match, the girls beat Round Lake by 294 pins. Then, in a nail-biter, Round Lake came back with Wauconda only winning by 38 pins. Not letting their momentum affect Wauconda’s desire to win, the girls pulled through and won the final game by 92 pins. Although it was a team effort, an outstanding performance from Shannon Franklin, with a 601 series and a 205 high game, helped seal the deal.
Continuing their winning streak, on Friday, January 27th, the girls bowled off against the twelve other schools in the North Suburban Conference. Although they'd already won the division, the conference champions were up for grabs. In another nail-biter, the girls came out victoriously, beating the Vernon Hills Bears by a total of 30 pins after six games. It was truly a team effort with four out of the five team members-Dorina Badino-Berger, Kristine Micheletti, Melissa Ohms, and Cyndi Teuber- placing in the top 19 individually. Out of those four girls, two managed to place in the top ten. Dorina Badino-Berger finished in ninth place with 1,070 pins and Cyndi Teuber finished in fourth place with 1,139 pins. Overall, the ladies bowled fantastically.
The girls and head Coach Mindy Lorence are looking forward to sectionals on Saturday February 4. They are hoping to make it state for the first as a team.
