Wauconda residents enjoy a "Day at the Lake"

by Josh Van Dyke

The weather cleared up just in time on July 25th for a "Day at the Lake," a series of events presented by the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce.

Sights to see and things to do included a boat parade, "Duck Drop," Baggo tournament, kids' fishing derby, jet-ski shows, and a triathlon for children.  The events took place at different places throughout the town, with crowds gathering at the Park District's beach, the porch of Dock's Bar and Grill, Lindy's Landing, and the docks near Wauconda Boat.

Participants had a chance to not only kill time but also earn prizes at the events.  Various businesses each had their own board, from which people could buy a number for $20 during the day.  At night 110 numbered ducks--the kind that go in bathtubs, not the kind with feathers--were dropped from a bucket onto a bulls-eye.

Despite the number having a reputation for being unlucky, those who picked #13 won between $600 and $1000 for each board they bought the number from.          The exact amount of money earned depended on how many numbers on the board were sold.  If all of the numbers were sold, which would cost $2200, $1000 would go to the winner, $200 would go toward paying for operational costs for the event, and the last $1000 would go to Bangs Lake Management.

The final event of the evening was a boat parade where the vessels were decorated with the theme of "Hollywood."  The winner of the contest, which based its design on the movie "The Blues Brothers," won $1000.
